The area around Overpelt offers numerous possibilities for enjoying nature, such as hiking, picnicking, mountain biking and recreational cycling. Overpelt and its surroundings boast a network of cycling paths, which you can enjoy over many days and hours. Overpelt has numerous places whose natural beauty will tempt you to take a healthy stroll or a brisk walk in the greenery. Tourism Flanders and Tourism Limburg, have put in place two hiking and walking areas to showcase the regional landscape of the "Lage Kempen", namely "Dommelvallei Overpelt" and "Holven / Plat".

The nearby town of Lommel, the nature city of Flanders, is also known as a bicycle paradise. You can indulge in a spot of retail therapy in the many fine shops that line Lommel's city centre.

The "Ruiter en Menroutenetwerk Limburg", a network of routes for equestrian and other activities, covers more than 550 km from the northernmost point of the "Limburgse Kempen" to the forest areas of the Hoge Kempen National Park. This new network passes through the municipalities of Lommel, Meeuwen-Gruitrode, Overpelt, Neerpelt, Peer, Hamont-Achel, Bocholt, Bree, Kinrooi, As, Maaseik, Opglabbeek, Genk, Zutendaal, Maasmechelen and Lanaken.

Since August 2009, the equestrian map of Limburg has been extended to include the "Equidroomroute" of Peer/Bocholt and the routes of the Hoge Kempen National Park. Using this handy map, horseback riders and carriages can choose their own paths and routes to explore Northern Limburg. With starting places in each municipality, one can explore the Limburg woods and fields from any point of convenience. The tracks have a minimum width of 2 metres, so even carriages will be able to make the most of the network with hardly any detours.

The Equestrian Route network card costs EUR 6 and is available from the tourist office. More information about equestrian activities in Limburg is available on the website of Tourism Limburg.

Limburg has a reputation as a sporting province, and its natural surroundings are perfectly suited for wonderful mountain biking tours. Northern Limburg has now its own Mountain Biking Network. This network includes nearly 270 km of marked trails and runs through the municipalities of Lommel, Hechtel-Eksel, Peer, Bocholt, Overpelt, Neerpelt and Hamont-Achel. In addition, three municipalities have implemented a unique concept to link this network to several Dutch routes in North Limburg and North Brabant.
